Why Software Updates Matter for Security

It is easy to postpone update reminders, but many updates contain security fixes. When a weakness in software is discovered, developers release a patch. Devices that are not updated may stay exposed to that known issue.

What to keep updated

• Your operating system (Windows, macOS, iOS, Android).
• Web browsers and browser extensions.
• Apps you use regularly, especially ones that open files or connect to the internet.
• Your security software and its detection definitions.
• Your home router’s firmware.

Make it easier

Turn on automatic updates where available, and restart your device periodically so pending updates can finish installing.

Older devices

When a device or operating system reaches end of support, it may stop receiving security updates. Check your device maker’s website to see whether your version is still supported, and plan ahead for a replacement or upgrade if it is not.
