ANTIVIRUS GUIDE

What to Do If You Think Your Computer Has Malware

A slow computer, unusual pop-ups, or a browser home page that changed on its own can be signs of unwanted software, but they can also have ordinary explanations. These steps can help you check without panicking.

1. Pause and avoid sharing information

Do not enter passwords or payment details until you have a better idea of what is going on, and do not respond to pop-ups that ask you to call for help.

2. Run a scan with your installed security software

Open your antivirus or the built-in security tool directly—not through a link in a pop-up—and run a full scan. Follow its recommendations for anything it finds.

3. Review recent changes

  • Uninstall apps or browser extensions you do not recognize or no longer need.
  • Reset your browser settings if your home page or search engine changed unexpectedly.
  • Make sure your operating system and apps are up to date.

4. Protect your accounts

If you suspect your passwords may have been exposed, change them from a device you trust, starting with email and banking. Turn on multi-factor authentication where available.

5. Get help through a trusted route

If problems continue, contact your device maker, your software provider through its official website, or a local support professional you trust.
