ANTIVIRUS GUIDE
Before buying antivirus software, it helps to know what your computer already includes. Both Windows and macOS come with built-in security features that are enabled by default on current versions.
Current versions of Windows include Microsoft Defender Antivirus as part of Windows Security. It scans for malicious software, receives regular definition updates through Windows Update, and works alongside the built-in firewall. You can open Windows Security from the Start menu to check its status.
Macs include several layers of protection, such as Gatekeeper, which checks apps before they open, and XProtect, which helps detect known malware. These run in the background and are updated by Apple.
That depends on how you use your device, what other features you want, and how comfortable you are managing settings. Some people prefer a third-party product for extra features such as web filtering or multi-device management. Others find the built-in tools, combined with good habits, meet their needs.
